Kid Is Qual
Two bass players and a drummer, son. This is how Kid is Qual rolls. And in their sonic quest to create and perform a new bass driven sound, Jonathan Sullivan (lead bass), Mike Bryant (rhythm bass) and Chris McClish (drums) have been writing, recording, and grinding out jams, sharing the stage with the likes of Devo, Crystal Castles, Electric Six, Jack's Mannequin, the Audition, Valencia, the Gay Blades, Every Avenue, and Schoolly D, among others. Throw in a talkbox, a pile of analog effects pedals, percussions, and some Jager, and you have all the tools of KIQ's fuzzy/gritty/slutty brand of dance rock.
Kid is Qual was born in the summer of 2007 , as Sullivan was hard at work on his (then) band, Jack's Mannequin's second record, "The Glass Passenger". Soaking up the energy and swagger of sunny Los Angeles, Sullivan began to demo out the first KIQ song, "Motel, no tell". He drew upon his love of 1980's rock influenced R&B (the Gap Band), bass driven dance rock (Death From Above 1979, Trans Am), and "talkbox king" Roger Troutman (Zapp). Inspiring his "lead bass" style and tones were legendary guitarists Ernie Isley and Vernon Reid.
Over the next 3 years, Sullivan balanced his hectic touring schedule with JM (one that took him around the world and afforded him TV apperances on Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly, and Craig Kilborn), and snuck KIQ onto as many shows as humanly possible. The band also took to tracking drums at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA and began overdubbing with producer Jason Finkel in Brooklyn, NY. While putting the finishing touches on their debut EP "Damn Son", KIQ also filmed their first video for "Knights of Ole" (directed by Denzel Whitaker and Ryan Perez) in late March 2011. "Damn Son" will be digitally released on iTunes. Here is what some of leaders in the entertainment industry are saying:
